All that you touch, you change… All that you change changes you.” ~ Octavia E. Butler Hey there, First, welcome again. I'm so glad you're part of this community now. When you signed up for Thriving Thoughts, you joined a space that understands what it's like to feel A LOT… And I don't take that lightly. Thank you for trusting me with your inbox and your energy. Let me tell you a quick story… For years, I couldn't go to cities, malls, or any crowded space without coming home and collapsing into what felt like a near coma. I would get headaches, feel nauseous, or have extremely low energy—and what I didn't know then but know now is that I was absorbing everything: the noise, the energy, the emotional static of hundreds of people. My body had no idea how to process it all. And I didn't know why. In fact, I didn't tell anyone about these feelings because everyone else liked the city. They enjoyed malls. They had fun in large crowds. So I thought—maybe I was imagining it. Maybe I was just being dramatic. So I'd push through. Force myself to act normal. And then I'd literally get physically ill. It felt like my body was shutting down. Exhausted. The after-effect was me lying there completely drained, looking up at the ceiling thinking: What is wrong with me? Here's what I wish someone had told me then: Nothing was wrong with me. I just didn't have the tools yet. And here's something else I've learned since; something that might surprise you: Even if you don't identify as an "empath," if you're an intuitive, heart-centered person who feels deeply, a lot of this applies to you too. Because you pick up on energy… and when you have porous energy boundaries, it doesn't matter if you can consciously feel them or not, they can be overwhelmed quite easily. Because here's what sensitive, intuitive souls have in common, whether you call yourself an empath or not: Which of these ring true for you? *Overwhelm is often sensory, not spiritual. Bright lights, noise, crowded rooms, strong smells, too much conversation: these drain a sensitive nervous system, and then emotions feel amplified. *Many of us grew up as mood-readers. In unpredictable homes, kids learn to scan micro-signals: tone, facial expressions, posture. That survival skill can look like intuition later. *Your body registers emotion before your mind does. Tight chest, throat knot, nausea, fatigue, headache: these are all common with high sensitivity and stress reactivity. *Boundary issues can feel like being "too open." When you don't have clear emotional boundaries, your brain treats other people's feelings as urgent data- so you absorb more. *Some sensitive people are conflict-avoidant: not because they're weak, but because their nervous system experiences conflict as loud and dysregulating. *Compassion and empathy aren't the same. Empathy feels-with; compassion cares-without-being-flooded. Many sensitive people do better when they shift toward compassion. Understanding that these symptoms were part of a bigger pattern changed so much… Because being deeply feeling isn't about learning to shut down or toughen up. It's about learning to work with your sensitivity and your abilities instead of fighting them. That's why I created something for you. It's called The Empath's Guide to Practical Magic (though really, it's for anyone who feels deeply and needs grounded tools to navigate that), and it's filled with the practices I wish I'd had in that parking lot—simple, usable tools you can reach for when:
This isn't theory. It's what actually works when you're standing in the middle of the overwhelm. This is what worked for me. And I know it can work for you as well. 👉 [Download your free guide here] Inside, you'll find grounding techniques, energetic boundary practices, and ways to work with your sensitivity so it empowers you instead of exhausting you. Know this: your depth and sensitivity are gifts. You just need to learn how to hold them without burning out. I hope this helps ease some of the strange but wonderful sides of being different, being sensitive, being a being of energy… This gets easier. Keep going! You're doing beautifully.
