Everybody Plays The Fool ..Sometimes

Living Better. Living well. It begins with the exhale ~"Ahh"

“The Fool teaches us that life is simply a continuous dance of experience.” ~ Rachel Pollack,

"Everybody plays the fool, sometimes, no exceptions to the rule." The Main Ingredient

And don't we, though? We may feel a bit embarrassed or too proud to admit it, but even the best of us has played the fool at one point. But what is a fool, really? Usually just a really naive person who generally has a good heart. Sometimes this gets them into trouble, like the lyrics suggest, with others who don't necessarily have their best interests at heart.

What If the Soul Was the Fool?

But stick with me for a minute: what if the soul was the fool? If we peel back all of our human experience and just look at the blueprint that makes us us, we would probably find someone with a good heart who was trusting, honest, and curious. You know, back before life’s heartaches, trauma, and the accumulation of pain had a chance to settle in and build its walls.

So, with that in mind, let's explore the very first card in the tarot deck - the Fool - because if you are reading this, you, my friend, have at least once started on this Fool's journey.

Standing at the Edge

Tarot isn't only a set of pictures with fortunes attached. The 22 Major Arcana cards work like a map of stages we all pass through in one form or another, which is why thinkers like Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell spent so much time on archetypes and the hero's journey. The Fool is number zero, the one who hasn't started yet. He stands at the edge of a cliff with a little bag over his shoulder and his face turned to the sky, about to step forward without knowing what's below. A small dog is at his heels, barking or cheering, depending on the day.

Look closely and he isn't clueless so much as willing. He sees the risk and decides the unknown is worth it. That's the beginner's mind: open, curious, not yet convinced he has it all figured out. Every one of us has stood in that spot, whether it was leaving a job, ending a relationship, moving, starting a practice, or saying yes to something with no guarantees.

The Light and Shadow of Beginnings

However, The Fool has a shadow side, too. Sometimes a leap is really a reaction, made from anger or fear rather than trust. And sometimes we do the opposite: we stay too long in a place we’ve outgrown because taking that leap feels too big.

The card holds both sides of that story: the good and the bad, the yin and yang of beginnings, and asks us to tell them apart.

That's what I love about starting here. The Fool doesn't ask you to be fearless. He asks you to be honest about where you are, and to notice whether you're standing at an edge right now.

A Moment to Turn Inward

This week , take a moment this week to sit with these questions and see what unfolds.

  • When was the last time you took a leap, and what did it teach you?
  • Did that leap come from trust, or from fear or frustration?
  • What are you holding onto that you’ve already outgrown, and what would help you loosen your grip?
  • Where are you standing at the edge of something new, and what is making you hesitate?

I’d love to know what comes up for you.

The Story Across the Cards

Tarot works in combination, not isolation. A spread is just the layout we use for a reading, maybe one card for the morning, or perhaps ten for deeper inquiry, and each position holds a different piece of the picture: what's happening now, what's beneath the surface, what step might come next. The same card can mean different things depending on what sits around it. Pull the High Priestess, and she might ask you to lean into your intuition or sit in stillness long enough to hear what’s really going on. That’s what tarot offers: a way to see your own patterns more clearly and name what you’ve been carrying.

So trust the ground beneath you, trust the pull in your chest, and keep going gently from here.
